Peridot is idiochromatic, which means its color comes from the chemical composition of the gem. Peridot is a rare gemstone that only occurs naturally in one color. It is a form of Olivine, a mineral composed of magnesium and iron. With the inclusion of outside elements, certain gemstones can occur in every color of the rainbow. Peridot, however, only exists in subtle shades of green.

Peridot is one of the oldest known gemstones, and has been mined as a gem for over 4,000 years.
